Comment:

 MSN and XMPP accounts have an option to disable "custom" smileys, IRC has
 no such concept. The only way to disable the standard smileys is to select
 the None smiley theme in the preferences, which will disable them (and
 "custom" smileys for all accounts).

 There is one other option, if you select some text in the conversation
 window history (or entry) area you can right-click and 'Disable smileys in
 selected text' but that is re-active and limited in scope.
