 Pidgin was working fine until this morning when I booted up and it crashed
 on startup.  I upgraded to 2.5.5 and the same thing happened.  So I went
 and got the debug build and installed that.  Same thing happened.
 Attached are the pidgin.rpt and debug.log files.  Glancing at the files
 indicates that ASpell is related to the issue at hand.

 Hmm.  I just solved it.  The ASpell DLL that was being loaded was the PHP
 ASpell DLL instead of the one Pidgin installs.  Both files have the same
 exact name.  I set the PATH environment variable to point at PHP
 yesterday.  The fix was to put the ASpell path just before the PHP path.

 I'm surprised something like this hasn't been found before.
