Comment:

 Run xev in a terminal (redirecting the output to a file), then press v, w,
 strg-v, strg-w, i, s, o, strg-i, and strg-o with the xev window in focus
 and upload that file here. Either your keyboard layyout is busted, the
 shortcuts in pidgin are busted (you would see that on the menu item most
 likely), or something else is going on.

 Have you used the 'Close conversation windows with the Escape key'
 preference? I'm not suggesting you do that, just asking whether you have
 previously.
