 I see your point, but I'm having trouble trying to understand how a
 solution, which continues to place windows directly over top existing
 ones, can be better.

 Let's note that the current pidgin implementation places conv windows
 where the last configured (sized, moved, stacked) window has been located.
 This does not always result in placing the window where the user left it.

 I believe the solution I've proposed will attempt to do what your reports
 described, and open new windows where old ones have previously been left
 (ie: closed).

 To take it simply as a use case, and not to belittle the work being done
 here, MSN Messenger behaves exactly as I have described - and there are
 many Windows users using that (for better or worse).
