 Hi,
 now I have figured out what was the problem in the first place! I have
 tried this both on Ubuntu 9.04 and Windows XP SP3 both using Pidgin 2.5.5.

 In Accounts | Manage Accounts | Add (or Modify) button | Advanced tab |
 Proxy type. If I use "Use Global Proxy Settings" then the error appears.
 If I select "HTTP proxy" and manually enter proxy settings then Pidgin can
 connect and working fine.

 Is this a bug?
