Comment:

 Sorry, I missed that point. The original error I was having led me to
 suspect of libxml when backtracing in gdb (It was hanging every time I
 entered the password for a newly created gmail account). So I downgraded
 libxml (it was in unstable) and re-ran pidgin from there and it started to
 hang randomly, always from within gdb, throwing that error.

 I followed your instructions now and it seems it's working OK now. I'd say
 it's safe to close this ticket now. Sorry again for wasting your time...
