No, I never did, but I'm not sure it's worth keeping open. Since
reporting this bug, my system was upgraded to CentOS 5.2, which has
gstreamer-0.10 as part of the standard install. pidgin was not installed
by default and since I'm not the root user, I compiled it from source
along with many of its supporting libraries - all installs are in a local
directory, not in /usr. ''This time, everything seems to be working OK''
 - I've set the preference to ALSA (since it appears to allow asynchronous
playing, while ESD does not appear to) and sounds are coming through just
 fine.

The original bug may have been due to some misconfiguration in CentOS 4,
or some conflict between the centrally-installed gstreamer-0.08 and my
self-compiled gstreamer-0.10... that does not appear to be the case on my
 new system.

So... although I have no clue why it didn't work before or how to have
fixed it, it's working now under the new setup, so the issue is a non-
 issue for me, now.

 Thanks.
