 I had some similar curious MSN login issues with Pidgin 2.5.5 (though it
 was on Vista in my case).  Unfortunately I wasn't using that machine
 intensively at the time and didn't give it much thought...

 With no system changes that I can recall, in late April, my MSN account
 suddenly disconnected and wouldn't reconnect.  (Can't recall the exact
 error).
 In early May, the host rebooted to install KB955430 (and some Office and
 Visual Studio patches).
 Following this, Pidgin would crash on startup.
 I installed 2.5.5-debug and Pidgin now no longer crashes *plus* my MSN
 account will login again.
