 You can modify the pidgin bindings however you want yourself, as explained
 in the [http://developer.pidgin.im/wiki/Using
 Pidgin#HowdoIbindkeystrokestomenuitems FAQ]. Control-l is a 'standard'
 shell keybinding for clear which is almost certainly why the conversation
 window uses it. Personally, I don't really understand why we have a clear
 keybinding by default at all, but it has never mattered enough to warrant
 changing.
