 Same problem here, I am using Ubuntu 8.10 too and I tried updating Pidgin
 to version 2.5.5 and the problem persists. The problem is random,
 sometimes I can use it for hours without any crash and sometimes I just
 can't use it. Running "pidgin --debug" shows the following by the time of
 the crash:

   "Falha de segmentação" is segmentation fault. I will try to run it with
 gdb later.
