 I now believe this is caused by a plugin.  Using ubuntu's package manager
 to uninstall ALL plugins seems to relieve any issue.

 I thought having all plugins unchecked would be sufficient.  After re-
 installing just the OTR ( off the record ) plugin, the symptoms
 reappeared: Help->About and attempting to sign on to any service causes
 glibc to complain of free( )ing an invalid pointer.

 Where is the right place to send this information?
