OK, it's good to know that you don't do it intentionally. If you have any
theories as to why it happened on my system anyway, I'd be interested to
hear them.

be typing
I didn't mean that pidgin should psychically detect what I'm doing. I just
meant to stress that an IM program stealing focus could be a Very Bad
Thing, because the user might be typing a password. Sorry if I was
unclear.

I'm using vanilla Gnome on Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron (LTS) along with the
default pidgin from the repos. Do you consider that to be brain-dead? I've
got "preferences > appearance > effects" set to None and I haven't
intentionally made any configuration changes to affect
notifications/attention requesting. If there is a way to configure my
system to keep pidgin off my screen until I click the icon in the
notification area, then I'm all ears.

I don't know if that's what I suggested since I don't know the
implementation. However I would like to suggest to (have an option to?)
never have pidgin open a window unless as a direct result of a user
action, such as clicking a widget. Is that also unreasonable?

What do you mean by "default", and how does it relate to opening windows?
