 I have recompiled pidgin and mbpurple with NSS and haven't got any further
 alerts so far. So:

 * install EquifaxSecureGlobaleBusinessCA-1.pem into ca-certs

 * use pidgin with NSS

 fixes this problem. I second darkrain42, mbpurple should install
 EquifaxSecureGlobaleBusinessCA-1.pem and recommend NSS until #4458 is
 fixed.
