 changing the line to have a complete path:

 run_or_die ${SED} "s:'\^\$\$lang\$\$':\^\$\$lang\$\$:g" -i "`dirname
 "$0"`"/po/Makefile.in.in
 }}}
 gets past that stage successfully.

 However, I'm still getting a build failure in an environment that works
 with 2.6.0's sources:

 This may or may not be related, or there may be some other change in the
 interim responsible. I'm still investigating.
