 I think this is a known bug in ejabberd ([https://support.process-
 one.net/browse/EJAB-939 EJAB-939]), in short, the pubsub database tables
 on the server are corrupted. This can be confirmed by examining the server
 logs and comparing them to the server log in that ticket.

 The server in question here is running ejabberd 2.0.1, which was ''known''
 not to upgrade the relevant database table when updating from 1.x
