 See screenshot before you continue reading, it shows my issue pretty well.

 I am at school, Messenger/MSN/Windows Live is NOT blocked, yet I am unable
 to connect to this service. I have not tried with AIM but I believe it's
 the same thing, Pidgin is not allowed to connect while Messenger is.
