 The last time I saw a memory leak issue like that, there was also a
 problem with hundreds of threads being made at the same time. I eventually
 tracked it down to ZoneAlarm (any version at the time). Uninstalled ZA and
 Pidgin was happy.

 Not sure if this was ever addressed here.
