 I was afraid that was going to be the case.

 I think the problem is that during login the ath9k wireless driver is
 sometimes crashing causing some files to be loaded incorrectly. I've filed
 a bug about it in Ubuntu
 (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/441433) so can just
 hope it gets fixed. I think I'll just have to start making regular backups
 of my accounts files.
