Comment:

 If that's the case (no xmpp/jabber SRV entries) then maybe pidgin should
 try to at least automatically fallback to using talk.google.com?

 Also the current error I get in Pidgin is:

 "You require encryption, but it is not available on this server."

 which is not helpful at all and seems irrelevant to me in this case.
