 same problem here with ubuntu 9.04 and pidgin 2.6.1

 but i have another problema guy described here:

 "[...] pidgin does not recognize when a buddy goes offline. So pidgin does
 not change his status and when I try to write the buddy a message, pidgin
 tells me, that sending did not work because the buddy is offline. So he
 does not even treat it as an offline-message, that is stored on the server
 and send to the buddy when he comes back on again."
