Comment(by jmw):

 It occurs to me that it *might* be some kind of software firewall on her
 machine. It normally pops up when new programs are installed. Only I
 didn't see it popup at all. The makers of the firewall might have white
 /black-listed pidgin already. If it's not that, it's still likely to be
 some sort of external program or driver that hooks into the network stack.
 The machine is an HP Pavilion laptop, if that helps at all. I guess a
 generally applicable solution to things like that would just to be to add
 one or more extra threads for the network code, but that might5 also just
 obfuscate the problem.

  As I said, it probably shouldn't have been connected to any networks
 because I hadn't configured any accounts yet, so the target machine that
 refused the connection was probably the machine it was running on, i.e.
 some sort of firewall or similar app blocked a connection that it needed
 but didn't go to the trouble of bringing up a window. It seems kind of
 doubtful it was the firewall though. I kind of suspect it would have
 connected but just run really slowly had I been patient enough to
 configure an account on it. Let me know if you can think of any way at all
 for me to find the source of the problem.
