 Then close the ticket as "wontfix".

 I, and several of the people who I have introduced Pidgin to, would like
 to have this ability with our buddylists, but if the pidgin developers are
 so adamantly against it that any patch will be rejected, please close the
 ticket.

 There's no sense to having it open for 2 years if you don't intend to
 implement the functionality.

 Thank you though, for the best IM client out there!
