Comment:

 After you set the sound you want to use if you hit the Test button do you
 hear your sound or the default sound? What happens if you close the
 preferences window and then reopen it, do you hear your sound or the
 default sound? What is the path to the sound file you are trying to use?
 What happens if you put it somewhere else (try just in C:\ as a quick test
 maybe)?

 Do you perhaps have a buddy pounce for the buddy set up to play the
 default sound? What plugins do you have loaded?
