 The alias isn't because the server doesn't know anything about it and you
 can change it whenever you want, it isn't a uniquely identifying piece of
 information. Incoming data from the server will never make reference to
 your local alias and as such pidgin can't use it to match against, etc.

 For local differentiation the local alias can work just fine (though
 people often use the same local alias for all their accounts, something
 like 'Me' or what-have-you) but that's not the 'problem' we need the
 unique information to 'solve'.
