Comment:

 What specifically about those directions doesn't work for you? Do you have
 gdb installed as well as the pidgin/libpurple debug packages (if
 VectorLinux has those)?

 You can also try getting the debug log output (run 'pidgin -d >
 debug.out') from pidgin that may or may not be enough to be useful here.
