Comment:

 The Easy Way and The Hard Way are two different ways of doing the same
 thing, you don't need to do them both. Just one of them. The backtrace you
 received from following the easy way is the sort of thing we need, however
 you need to install the pidgin and libpurple debug symbols (either through
 debug packages if VectorLinux has those or by some other method, possibly
 uninstalling the vector package and installing pidgin from source) and get
 the backtrace again for it to be more helpful.
