Comment:

 That message in the status selector means that pidgin believes your
 network connection is down and so attempting to connect will inevitably
 fail. Can you get the Help->Debug Window output from when your computer
 goes to sleep and wakes back up? Hopefully some information about what is
 going on with the network connection status will be present.
