 yes it causes autogen fail.  I get:

 running /usr/bin/sed s:'\^$$lang$$':\^$$lang$$:g-ipo/Makefile.in.in...
 failed.
 sed: -i: No such file or directory
 }}}

 And then the output of po/Makefile.in.in

 I'm playing with it again to see if I can fix it.
