 Ok, I've done a bit more testing and here's how to reproduce:

 1) Start pidgin, all connections connect successfully.
 2) Put computer on standy.
 3) Wake computer up, pidgin attempts to reconnect but only appears to be
 successful on AIM, Yahoo, and Hotmail.  I have two XMPP connections to
 gchat, neither are standard gmail accounts, but google apps accounts
 instead.
 4) Right click on the tray icon and quit and the application ''usually''
 crashes (but not every time).
 5) Starting back up after crash resumes normal execution/behavior.
