 I make the friendly name change in accounts > _specific account_ > Edit
 account > Local alias

 This is really weird, as it happens to me in pidgin 2.6.1 but it does also
 happen with 2.5.9-1 on debian, I set the accounts on debian first so I
 don't know if that may be causing any trouble, but I've just noticed that
 no user name is set properly, the characters used don't matter. Also, it
 displays my mail address in one account, but in the other it keeps the
 name I had before, no matter what I do. I'll try to come back with more
 details on the weekend.
