Comment:

 No, the method is not wrong. Nothing about it is wrong. You simply don't
 like how it looks when you send a large image. But consider what happens
 if you send a small image (something smiley sized), your request would
 have it take up an extra row for no reason at all and entirely prevent
 someone from actually having it be displayed inline. Whereas if you want a
 newline before your image you can simply insert one manually to force the
 layout you prefer.

 Now if you are suggesting that pidgin determine whether to automatically
 insert a newline based on the size of the image that might be something
 worth considering but probably still not worth the effort. The only thing
 I find sub-optimal about the current mechanism is that the image is set on
 the text baseline as opposed to being set against the top of the line and
 hanging down (but again that only makes sense for really large images, as
 for small images that will make them "float").
