Comment:

 I think, somewhat regardless of past behaviour, that the current behaviour
 (which as far as I know has always been the case) is the more correct
 behaviour (and allows for PURPLEHOME to be set to mirror HOME, etc.
 without clobbering/cluttering things up). So I'm going to close this.
