Comment(by Pruna):

 I have the same issue: I connect to my ISP through PPPOE and my Local Area
 Connection IP (I'm on WinXP SP2) is 192.168.56.23[[BR]]
 When I start Pidgin, next to "Use automatically detected IP address" is my
 local IP and "Public IP" is grayed-out and empty.
 But if I disable TCP/IP for Local Area Connection, it shows my public IP
 (without restarting Pidgin)[[BR]]

 In the first debug log Pidgin complained about NLA who could not start
 (it's disabled on my setup)

 {{{
 (18:16:19) network: Couldn't retrieve NLA SP lookup handle.
 NLA service is probably not running.
 Message: WSAStartup cannot function at this time because
 the underlying system it uses to provide network services
 is currently unavailable. (10091).
 }}}

 I've enabled NLA, but with the same results. Only the aforementioned error
 is replaced with this:

 {{{
 (18:25:23) network: found network '192.168.56.0'
 (18:25:23) network: found network '188.25.180.166'
 }}}

 As I played with disabling TCP/IP for Local Area Connection, Pidgin dumped
 this:

 {{{
 (18:25:23) stun: using server
 (18:25:23) GLib-GObject: g_object_unref: assertion `G_IS_OBJECT (object)'
 failed
 }}}

 As a side note, in preferences "stun server" is empty

 I'm not sure if this is the cause, but (1) I can't send files and (2) in
 buddy "User Info" the IP is most of the time 255.255.255.x or a private IP
 and seldom the public IP
