 No, that isn't quite it.  I can change my friendly name locally, and I see
 it in the chat windows on my end.  The person I am chatting with sees
 Matthew.M.Shannon at GMail.com (E-Mail Address Not Verified) regardless of
 what I set my friendly name to be.

 However, if I chat with someone using the Windows Live Messenger, I can
 set my friendly name to anything and that will convey to the person with
 whom I am chatting.

 It is as if there is something that the Windows Live Messenger learns of
 that the Pidgin MSN client does not...
