 $PYTHON is set to the path to the python binary a little further up. It is
 what is set by the --with-python autoconf option. The Python header test
 had its own check for Python and the binary name was constrained to just
 "python" so if you had a python binary like "python2.5" and specified this
 with the autoconf option it'll fail the Python header check.
