 exactly what I'm requesting here.

 We do a lot of dev work and often copy and paste website report table data
 directly from our web browsers into Pidgin.  The default behavior of
 pasting in rich text format screws up the view and it gets annoying to
 have to right-click and choose "paste as plain text" all the time.

 It would be nice if the default behavior of "copy and paste" could be
 chosen within Tools > Preferences so a user can decide if they want that
 behavior to paste as rich text or plain text by default.
