 This bug appears in Pidgin 2.6.6 as well.

 There's a quick fix to it for the user (which does not change the bug
 itself though):
 1. Check the box so Pidgin will use the last status at next startup.
 2. Restart Pidgin
 3. Uncheck the box again and choose a status you prefer.
 4. Restart Pidgin - it should now work.

 Seems to be an issue with the default settings file.
