 I've done some testing on this as I'm interested in this feature, too.
 Sometimes it's useful to have auto-join for a channel without the need to
 open the chat-window on join (be idle but available).

 I'm attaching a patch (just a draft, goes on top of 2.6.6) which adds an
 option which allows to show chat-window hidden. It's far from perfect and
 it doesn't do 100%ly what it should (at the moment chat-conversations from
 this channel will be hidden, too) - but you got the idea.
