The explanation for why this is crashing hasn't changed since [#comment6 a
year ago], namely that the glib/gtk perl modules are installing their own
log handlers, and then break because assertion failures coming from
libpurple and Pidgin don't have the associated context.
As I also said then, I don't know enough about Perl's internals to know
why various methods and order of operations do or do not cause the perl
glib bindings to try to install their log handlers (or perhaps an ordering
issue where Pidgin installs them after glib's).
