 It IS a server bug, however AOL is very unlikely to fix it.  The fix I
 outlined works (I've done it in a standalone app), and is literally an
 extra for loop.  It's a few lines of code that fixes it.  I would prefer
 the fix within Pidgin, but I figured people would get all upset, so I
 asked for it as a plugin.

 Isn't changing how the client works what plugins are for?
