#12514: Fundamental flaw in smiley theme options.
-------------------------------------------------------+--------------------

Type: defect | Status: new
Component: custom emoticons | Version: 2.7.3
Keywords: emoticons smileys settings options themes |
-------------------------------------------------------+--------------------
I'm not too big on emoticons (you know, the image kind), however I do use
smileys a lot ( :), :/, etc, i.e. text).
For this reason, I have set my smiley theme to "none". This is perfect for
me, because I don't have to see those smiley icons. They are just ":)"
etc.
However, as this particular theme option states, "[s]electing this [smiley
theme] disables graphical emoticons" for my *buddies* as well! So for
those who do wish to send me emoticons or custom emoticons cannot do so!
And most often, when they send custom emoticons, they arrive as weird, and
sometimes long, arrays of garbage characters.
And so, the setting is flawed, fundamentally, as it should instead be a
setting that enables or disables "*sending* of emoticons". That way, as an
added bonus, when I want to send a mathematical question (involving say
"(x)" or "(y)"), those won't be converted to a thumbs up ("(y)") and
whatever "(x)" is, for MSN buddies.
In short: I should be able to not send emoticons, but still be able to
receive them.
(I really hope emoticons aren't interpreted on the receiving client's
side. :/)
