 I'm having a very similar problem. I'm running pidgin 2.7.3 on Windows XP
 SP3.

 When I initiate a chat and send a message using MSN protocol with a user
 on an enterprise Office Communications Server, first I get "Message could
 not be sent because a connection error occurred" and then "Message may
 have not been sent because an unknown error occurred" but the message
 seems to be delivered. Subsequent messages don't create an error.
