 I reboot my (WinXP64) computer at work every afternoon, leaving it in the
 Logon screen until the next morning. When i set Pidgin to start
 automatically when i boot, every morning when i logon, Pidgin is
 unresponsive, taking full cpu load (luckily i have a dual core).

 Only remedy is to kill the process and start it again, after which no
 problems occur.

 I have noticed the same problem if i have used my computer remotely,
 effecively setting my local computer in the logon screen.
