Comment:

 The auto-away functionality will only change the status if the current
 status is an "available" status, the reasoning being if you set an
 unavailable status of "In a meeting all day." you wouldn't want your
 normal "I've walked away from my desk for a few minutes." message to
 override it.

 As to why dnd and invisible would work sometimes that it likely going to
 be related to either broken statuses in pidgin (accounts/protocols not
 correctly listing dnd/invisible as an away state) or a selection of
 dnd/invisible for accounts that don't support it (thus having them not
 actually change to it and staying at their previous status and thus still
 being available). Without more detailed scenarios for when this does and
 doesn't happen I can't say more than that.
