Comment:

 "You mean you can only press ctrl-l to clear the history area contents
 once in pidgin and then it fails to work again?" -- Yes.

 "When ctrl-l fails does the Conversations->Clear menu item still work?" --
 Yes, menu item works.

 "Does it still display the Ctrl+L shortcut?" -- Yes.

 "Does the Help->Debug Window say anything when you press ctrl-l when it
 doesn't work?" -- No, any activity there. By the way, there is no activity
 there even I'm using menuitem.
