Comment(by Dawudd):

 Expecting someone to check the FAQ does not make for a discoverable
 interface. The vast majority of people who are unaware of this shortcut
 will waste time retyping the lost message from memory while cursing under
 their breath. There are two issues here. First, Ctrl+↑/↓ are not
 discoverable. These shortcuts should be in the menu. The second is that
 Pidgin doesn’t notice when a long message was discarded. The humane
 solution in this situation is to do an automatic Ctrl+↑, thus returning
 the lost message to the input area. I have seen other chat clients do
 this. Or, better yet, the message should be split up and sent piecemeal
 all automatically. Either way, this should be solved automatically, as
 there is ''nothing'' here that actually requires user input.
