 Yes, I checked twice, however I think I found the problem, and it is not
 the new Pidgin install...

 When I tried showing off-line buddies I found three (3) entries for the
 same account.  Apparently one has a different alias, and it was the
 password for that account.  Two of the others appeared to be identical,
 but only one showed online when the user logged in.  I removed the
 duplicate account, and the "password" id account from my buddy list and
 things appear to be working properly.  I still have no idea how it
 happened, but I think you can close this one as "user error".
