Comment:

 Something is blocking the connection to the login server ("Connection
 timed out").  The official MSN client connects either because it contains
 fallback mechanisms or it simply uses a different server (since the
 current version of the official client uses a newer protocol version).

 Either figure out what is blocking the connection or try checking the "Use
 HTTP Method" box on the advanced tab of your MSN account's settings.
