 Maybe not so silly.  Something is still fishy.

 Shortly after I made the above report (having re-installed 2.6.5), I re-
 booted my machine for unrelated reasons.
 When it came up, one of the first apps I started was Pidgin.

 The same warning message popped up again!

 This time however, the AIM account is working anyway.
