Comment:

 When this happens does pidgin appear to be discarding the current
 connection attempt and then attempting to connect again? (The status
 selector in the buddy list might flash the status icon rather than the
 connecting icon at this point.) You can also watch the Help->Debug Window
 and see if it indicates anything happening when this occurs.
